Many basements in historic towns have sections of gravel and dirt, leaving awkward, unused space. I saw an opportunity to make the most of this kind of space by building a sturdy, secure shelf from all kinds of recycled wood I had on hand. I also did this on a raised platform, so that the dirt and gravel I was covering over could still breathe, and not lead to rot. This project gave extra storage space and made the area more functional. It turned out even better than I expected, and I felt good about reusing old wood that would have otherwise been thrown away. Now, it’s a perfect solution for storing items while keeping the space ventilated.
